Ageing adhesive joints may deteriorate further with water, heat or bending. Assess structure before planning wet cleaning.

Check first

  • Bond lines at the toe, sides and heel.
  • Gaps opening during gentle flexing.
  • Midsole powdering, hardening or tackiness.
  • Previous regluing and excess adhesive.

Working sequence

  1. Photograph the extent of separation.
  2. Pause soaking and machine washing.
  3. Assess bonding or structural repair first.
  4. Choose limited cleaning only after the repair is stable.

A small visible gap may extend deep between layers. High-temperature drying can accelerate deterioration of some adhesives.
