Ageing adhesive joints may deteriorate further with water, heat or bending. Assess structure before planning wet cleaning.
Check first
- Bond lines at the toe, sides and heel.
- Gaps opening during gentle flexing.
- Midsole powdering, hardening or tackiness.
- Previous regluing and excess adhesive.
Working sequence
- Photograph the extent of separation.
- Pause soaking and machine washing.
- Assess bonding or structural repair first.
- Choose limited cleaning only after the repair is stable.
A small visible gap may extend deep between layers. High-temperature drying can accelerate deterioration of some adhesives.
