Thinner is not automatically better. Folded edges need controlled bulk, bonded overlaps need smooth transitions and loaded areas need adequate structure. The first skiving skill is planning thickness distribution; tool operation follows. Use the teaching method, equipment instructions and required protection for knives and skiving machines.

Mark the pattern

Separate visible surfaces, returns, bonded overlaps and load-bearing connections. Write why each needs treatment, then set a target appropriate to leather, layers and use with an instructor's review.

Two 1.2 mm layers nominally make 2.4 mm before adhesive, lining and compression. This is a geometry example, not a recommended thickness. Analyse the stack before deciding which layer and area to thin.

Record position and direction

Firmness and stretch vary across a hide. Note the source area and feed direction; settings learned on a soft offcut are not fixed parameters for another leather. Use a suitable thickness gauge at consistent central, side and transition points with a consistent method and pressure. Feel alone is affected by softness.

Separate overall error from local grooves

If the whole sample is too thick or thin, check target and settings. Sudden thin spots call for checks of support, steady feeding and material variation. Repeating anomalies or obvious machine faults require stopping and professional inspection. Do not feed faster to hide variation or adjust the blade area while running.

If the first half of a folded-edge sample is natural and the second too thin and soft, locate the change and check whether the material skewed. Thinning the rest to match wastes more usable material.

Judge it after assembly

Complete the normal bond and fold, then inspect hard steps, curling, overly thin edges and imbalance. Loaded or frequently flexed areas need use-appropriate validation; appearance alone does not establish strength. Cutting through or thinning a critical area too far is not automatically reversible with filler. Reassess whether to discard the sample, change the pattern or replace the material.

Reading a checklist cannot replace supervised learning of blade-area safety and force control. For feedback, mark feed direction and edge, transition and retained-thickness measurements, then relate them to the pattern: does the fold sit smoothly, and is the seam area too thin? Use actual structure and instruction for targets, not a universal number.
