An oil stain depends on absorption, pigmentation, finish and any earlier use of wipes or washing-up liquid. Fresh oil should be blotted without rubbing. Older oil needs an assessment of its boundaries and depth before wet cleaning. Pale leather, aniline leather, suede, old repairs or colour transfer require particular caution.
Six questions before acting
- Did it happen within 15 minutes, today or several days ago?
- Was it food oil, cosmetics, hand cream, engine oil or an unknown substance?
- Is the boundary clear, expanding or developing a second ring?
- Is the surface finished smooth leather, absorbent unfinished leather, suede or a material combination?
- Does a white cloth pick up colour? Is there tackiness, blistering or previous recolouring?
- What is the item's financial or sentimental value, and how much risk is acceptable?
For fresh oil
- Photograph the stain. Lift any excess gently with the back of a spoon or a blunt card, without scraping.
- Press clean white oil-blotting tissue vertically against it, changing the contact area and working from the outer edge inward.
- Let it rest. Do not add heat, water, alcohol, washing-up liquid or powder.
- Photograph it in daylight and side light after 30 minutes and two hours to see whether it has stabilised.
Match the response to the material
For stable finished smooth leather, only a surface stain with no colour transfer may be suitable for a hidden product test; wait until the test dries. Vegetable-tanned, aniline and other absorbent leathers can take up oil quickly: blot, document and avoid enlarging the treated area. Keep suede and mixed materials dry and seek professional advice rather than brushing or wetting them.
Older oil may have oxidised and mixed with dust, conditioner or finish residues. A dark area may also involve wear or colour loss. A controlled local test should establish what is changing before any wider treatment.
A workshop record
- Ask about all previous actions and products.
- Take front, back, close-up and side-lit photographs.
- Record the test area's colour, gloss and feel.
- Change only one variable at a time: product, amount, tool or contact time.
- After drying, check for rings, colour change, tackiness and altered feel before another pass.
- Explain the improvement, remaining marks and aftercare at handover.
Stop if colour transfers, a ring spreads rapidly, the surface whitens, dulls or becomes tacky, grain flattens, an old coating dissolves, or oil reaches threads or lining.
Common questions
Can talc, flour or baking soda absorb it? Uncontrolled powders can lodge in the surface and leave residues or new boundaries.
Why did the mark return the next day? Oil within the material may have migrated back. Wait for stability before deciding on further work.
The aim is to reduce contamination while preserving the material, colour and a controlled boundary. Explain the limits; protecting a valuable item takes priority over promising an invisible result.
