Choose the method according to whether the problem is local wear, continuous cracking or separation from the leather edge. A surface coat alone often cracks again.

Check first

  • Does the cracking continue along the edge?
  • Has the old paint separated from the leather?
  • Do corners and load-bearing handle areas flex repeatedly?
  • Can the colour, thickness and rounded profile be blended locally?

Working sequence

  1. Clean and stabilise the edge.
  2. Remove genuinely loose, unstable material.
  3. Build an even profile and colour in thin layers.
  4. Allow thorough drying before checking gentle flexing.

A thick single coat or an untreated loose base can look smooth at first and then peel away in sheets during use.
