Coated canvas or leather? How to assess the material before care

Coated canvas and leather can look similar, but their surface structure, tolerance and treatment needs differ. Cross-check visible edges, texture, response to gentle pressure and construction details.

Similar appearance does not mean the same care method is suitable. Assess the surface and underlying material using several clues together.

What to look for

Inspect existing exposed edges and folds for the underlying fibres.
Compare the regularity of the texture and how the material springs back after gentle pressure.
Check worn areas: do they reveal a woven fabric backing or leather fibres?
Consult information about the brand and model. Do not identify the material from sheen alone.

Before treatment

Start with dry dust removal.
Test the proposed product in an inconspicuous area.
Choose the cleaning method for the actual surface material.
Recheck colour and feel section by section.

Why the distinction matters

Conditioning coated canvas as though it were leather may leave a greasy surface or soften the coating. Wet-cleaning leather as though it were ordinary fabric can cause water marks and distortion.
