Stage 1: materials, construction and stop conditions
Learn to recognise common leathers, fabrics, suede, finishes, hardware and structural components. The first achievement is knowing when a low-risk test is appropriate and when to stop and seek professional assessment.
Stage 2: cleaning and routine care
Distinguish dust, surface soiling, dye transfer, product residue and ageing damage. Practise spot testing, section-by-section treatment, small applications and progressive checks. Aim for a repeatable process rather than a dramatic one-pass result.
Stage 3: colour, finishes and repairs
Once assessment is reliable, study colour matching, edge paint, filling, recolouring, spray guns, airbrushes and hardware treatment. Covering a defect with colour does not restore its structure or surface condition. Check colour, feel, adhesion and a natural appearance at every stage.
Stage 4: brand cases, alterations and making
Use different brands and bag designs to understand how materials, construction and procedures interact. Extend this to leathercraft, machine sewing, disassembly, replacement leather panels and making. Combine individual techniques into sound decisions, records and reliable handovers.
